Eco-friendly Vocabulary in French

A beginner list of 14 French words for eco-friendly vocabulary, each with an example sentence to show it in context.

protéger	to protect	Nous devons protéger la nature. We must protect nature.
l’environnement	the environment	L’environnement souffre de la pollution. The environment suffers from pollution.
trier	to separate out	Je trie le verre du plastique. I separate glass from plastic.
les déchets	waste	Les déchets doivent être recyclés. Waste must be recycled.
une poubelle	a bin / trash can	Je jette le papier dans la poubelle. I throw the paper into the bin.
économiser	to save (resources)	Il faut économiser l’énergie. We must save energy.
réduire	to lower / to cut down	Réduisons notre consommation d’eau. Let’s cut down our water consumption.
l’eau	water	L’eau est précieuse. Water is precious.
le bain	the bath	Prends une douche plutôt qu’un bain. Take a shower rather than a bath.
la douche	the shower	La douche consomme moins d’eau. The shower uses less water.
tirer la chasse (d’eau)	to flush	Tire la chasse après les toilettes. Flush after using the toilet.
l’électricité	electricity	Coupons l’électricité en partant. Let’s switch off the electricity when leaving.
